Four Safety Equipment Needs If You Store Fuel On Site

Many types of businesses have fuel stored on site, such as lawn care services, repair shops, and small manufacturers. If your business stores fuel on site, then you need to be prepared in the event that there is a fuel spill. A fuel spill is not just a fire danger, the fuel itself can have negative impacts on health and it can damage surfaces in your building. The following pieces of equipment will make cleanup quick and safe.

1. Personal Protective Equipment

Keep some basic personal protective equipment inside your fuel cleanup kit. At a bare minimum, this should include eye protection and gloves. Choose eye protection that seals around the eyes so that fumes can not leak in and cause irritation. The gloves need to be thick and reach to the elbows. It is also a good idea to include a respirator mask, especially if the likely areas for a spill are poorly ventilated.

2. Containment Berms

A major concern with a spill is that it can spread and cover a large area. Quick deploy collapsible spill containment berms can be placed around the spill so that it is safely contained within seconds of it occurring. These berms are easily portable, so you can move them right to the spill. They also won't take up a lot of storage space since they are collapsed when the are in use.

3. Solidifier Material

Quick cleanup is necessary to avoid surface damage as well as to prevent accidental ignition of the fuel spill. Fortunately, there are powders that are specially formulated to quickly absorb fuel material safely. Keep these powders on hand in case there is ever a spill. The powder is sprinkled liberally over the spill until it is completely covered. Within a few minutes the excess fuel will be absorbed. The powder and the fuel can then be safely swept up for disposal.

4. Disposal Drum

You can't simply toss the fuel- soaked solidifier in the garbage. It needs to be disposed of in a hazardous waste facility. Keep plastic hazardous waste buckets or drums on site so you can safely collect and store the solidifier until disposal. Make sure all disposal containers are well marked so that they do not accidentally wind up in the normal garbage. Check with your municipality or waste disposal service for any other rules that govern fuel disposal.
