Why Is Proper Tool Loading Important?
If you don't load the tools onto your CNC lathe the right way, it can actually cause the turret to become misaligned. When the turret operates that way for any length of time, it leads to fatigue in the motor and can ultimately damage the turret and its indexing mechanism. Proper tool loading will help you avoid this kind of unnecessary wear and tear on your equipment.
Weight Distribution Matters
When you're inserting tools into the lathe, you need to make sure that you balance the weight across the turret. That means considering the weight of the tool holders as well, because the ID holders are much heavier than the OD ones.
It's tempting to load the tools by size, putting things like drills on one side and grooving pieces on the other. Unfortunately, even small tools can be quite heavy, so doing something like this can lead to an unbalanced turret. In addition, remember that the shorter tools are usually mounted on OD holders while the longer tools are mounted on ID holders.
Remember that the speed at which the turret rotates is pretty fast, and when the weight is evenly distributed, it makes sure that the turret stops efficiently and without excess strain on the motor. If the weight is unbalanced, though, it can cause the turret to struggle when it needs to stop, causing it to overshoot the stopping point and potentially lock up. You can tell when the turret is unbalanced, because it will seem a little bit clunky when it's turning.
Weight Distribution Doesn't Have To Be Difficult
Depending on the type of project you're working on, weight distribution can seem somewhat daunting. When you're dealing with tools that are too oddly sized to fit where you need them for proper weight balancing, you may wonder how you should deal with it. Sometimes, you can balance the weight out by changing the holders out. If you have areas where you need to have heavy ID holders and tools, you can add some weight to the opposite side by swapping the opposing holder out with another heavy ID holder. Choose a holder that's heavier than the one that's on the opposite side to help account for the weight of the tool. This gives you an empty space between the tools that don't fit beside each other without disturbing your weight distribution.
